What Are Flower Essences?
Flower essences are subtle, plant-based remedies that support emotional and energetic wellbeing.
Unlike herbal tinctures, which work through the physical body, flower essences work on a more energetic level - helping to shift patterns of stress, overwhelm, fear, grief, disconnection, and more.
They’re gentle, non-toxic and safe for all ages, including children, pets, sensitive individuals, and during pregnancy.
A Brief History
Flower essence therapy was developed in the 1930s by Dr. Edward Bach, a British physician who believed that emotional health was deeply connected to physical wellbeing.
He created a system of 38 remedies - now known as the Bach Flower Remedies - each corresponding to a specific emotional state.
Since then, practitioners around the world have expanded on his work, creating hundreds of additional essences from flowers, plants, and natural environments.
How Do Flower Essences Work?
Flower essences work through resonance.
Each plant carries a unique energetic pattern. When prepared as an essence, that pattern is imprinted into water and can interact with our own energetic and emotional state.
Rather than forcing change, they gently support awareness, release, and realignment - helping you move through emotions instead of suppressing them.
People often notice:
Subtle shifts in mood or perspective
Feeling more grounded or clear
Emotional patterns softening over time
A greater sense of connection to themselves
What Flower Essences are Not
Flower essences are often misunderstood, so it’s helpful to clarify what they are not:
They are not herbal supplements
They do not contain active plant compounds in measurable amounts
They are not sedatives or stimulants
They do not override your emotions or “fix” you
Instead, they support your body’s natural capacity to process and integrate emotional experiences.
How are They Made?
Flower essences are traditionally made by placing fresh flowers in pure water and allowing them to infuse in sunlight. This process transfers the energetic imprint of the plant into the water.
The infused water is then preserved (typically with alcohol or glycerine) and diluted to create a stock essence, which can further be diluted and blended into custom formulas.
How Do You Use Them?
Flower essences are simple to use:
Take 3-5 drops directly under the tongue or in water
Use 2-4 times per day, or as needed
Can also be added to tea, baths, or sprays
There’s no strict “right” way - consistency matters more than precision.
Acute vs. Chronic Use
Acute Use (For short-term situations like):
Traumatic and/or stressful events
Emotional overwhelm
Conflict or transitions
You can take them more frequently (every 15-30 minutes if needed).
Chronic Use (For deeper, ongoing patterns like):
Anxiety or overthinking
Grief or unresolved emotions
Long-standing behavioral or relational patterns
In this case, daily use over weeks or months allows for more gradual, integrated shifts
Less Is More
With flower essences, more is not better.
They don’t work through dosage in the conventional sense. A few drops are just as effective as a larger amount.
What matters most is:
Consistency
Presence when taking them
Choosing essences that resonate
How Do You Know Which Ones to Take?
The most important questions is:
“How am I feeling right now?”
You don’t need to diagnose yourself - just notice your emotional landscape.
You might choose essences based on:
Current emotions (fear, irritability, grief, overwhelm)
Patterns you’re noticing (people-pleasing, burnout, disconnection)
Situations you’re moving through
Trust your intuition, but if you want support, a personalized formula can be created for you.
When Would you Use Flower Essences?
People turn to flower essences during times such as:
Life transitions (career changes, moves, relationship shifts, having kids)
Fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum
Grief and loss
Stress and burnout
Emotional healing and personal growth
Navigating chronic illness
Feeling stuck, disconnected, or overwhelmed
Wanting deeper self-awareness and alignment
End of life support
They can be used on their own or alongside other forms of support like therapy, bodywork, somatic work, or herbal medicine.
What Does It Actually Feel Like?
Flower essences don’t create dramatic or immediate effects in the way supplements or medications might. The shifts tend to be subtle, but meaningful over time.
People often describe:
feeling slightly more calm or steady in situations that would normally feel overwhelming
having more space between a trigger and a reaction
noticing thoughts or patterns more clearly, without being as caught in them
emotional intensity softening rather than disappearing
a gradual sense of feeling more like yourself
In some cases, emotions may feel more present at first. This isn’t the essence “causing” something new - it’s often a sign that something is ready to be processed and released.
What If I Don’t Feel Anything?
It’s common not to feel an immediate or obvious effect from flower essences.
They don’t typically create strong or dramatic sensations. Instead they work more subtly - often in the background.
Some things to consider:
Shifts can be gradual. You may notice changes over days or weeks rather than right away
The changes are often situational. You might realize later that you responded differently to something that would have previously felt more intense
Awareness matters - because the effects are subtle, it can help to occasionally check in with yourself rather than waiting for a noticeable “feeling”
Not every formula is the right fit. If you don’t notice any shifts after a few weeks of consistent use, it may be worth adjusting the formula
If you’re unsure, you can always pause for a few days and then start again. The contrast can make subtle changes easier to notice.
How Long Will a 1oz Formula Last?
A standard 1 oz (30ml) formula typically lasts 3-4 weeks with regular use.
This assumes:
3-5 drops per dose
taken 2-4 times per day
If you use it more frequently (for acute situations), it may last closer to 2-3 weeks.
If you use it less consistently, it may last longer.
There’s not need to stretch it or conserve it - consistent use tends to be more supportive than occasional use.
When to Switch Formulas
How do you know when you’re ready for a new formula?
There is no strict timeline, but a few signs it may be time to shift:
the original emotional intensity has softened or resolved
your focus has naturally shifted to something new
the formula feels neutral or less noticeable
new patterns or challenges are coming into awareness
Some people stay with one formula for a month or two. Others move through them more quickly.
You don’t need to wait until it’s “finished working” - you can adjust as your experience evolves.
Pets & Children
Can children and pets use flower essences? Yes - flower essences are generally considered safe for both children and animals.
Because they are non-toxic and not chemically active, they’re often used for:
emotional regulation
transitions (new environments, routines, family changes)
anxiety, fear, or sensitivity
For children:
drops can be added to water, juice, or applied topically
For pets:
drops can be added to water bowls, food, or applied to ears or paws
Most flower essences are preserved in alcohol. However at the typical dosage (3-5 drops), the amount of alcohol is extremely minimal and is usually undetectable when diluted in water.
If you prefer to avoid alcohol entirely, formulas can also be prepared with vegetable glycerin.
A Gentle Support, Not a Replacement
Flower essences are a supportive tool, not a replacement for medical or psychological care.
They work best as part of a larger approach to wellbeing - alongside practices that help you feel safe, grounded, and connected in your body.
Practitioner Philosophy
I see flower essences as a tool for creating space - space to feel, process, and come back into alignment with yourself.
Many of us have learned to move through life by managing, suppressing, or thinking our way through emotions. Over time, that can create a sense of disconnection from the body and from what we’re actually experiencing.
Flower essences support a different process.
They don’t push or override.
They don’t force change.
They help bring awareness to what’s already there, so it can move in a more natural way.
In my work, I focus on:
supporting emotional processing rather than bypassing it
choosing essences that reflect your current experience, not an ideal state
working gently, without overwhelming the system
creating a sense of safety for whatever is ready to surface
A note on consent
Because flower essences work on an energetic and emotional level, your awareness and openness to the process matters.
It is important that the person taking a formula has a basic understanding of what they’re working with and is choosing to engage with it.
For this reason, I don’t recommend giving flower essences to someone without their knowledge, even if it’s coming from a place of care.
With children and pets, the dynamic is a little different.
In those cases, as their caregiver, the invitation is to check in more intuitively - paying attention to whether there is a sense of openness or receptivity. If something feels like a clear “no”, that needs to be honored.
This approach helps keep the process collaborative, respectful, and aligned with the intention of the work.
